Do you experience that things easily grow too big? Or that various phenomena in your life demand way too much time, energy, and resources? Maybe you just don’t share the prescribed view of expansion and acceleration as desirable?
RITE is opening the program at a netwoork meeting for SWAN (Swedish Artist Residency Network), taking place in Gothenburg, September 4th. All participants will begin the first day of the meeting with a ceremonial exercise in shrinking, designed and led by Sara Granér och John Huntington, both artists and active in our R&D.
The drive to constantly expand is deeply embedded in our culture – a form of fundamental belief that forward movement always is associated with an increase in scope and size. Constant growth is expected, not only only from our economy, but also from cities and municipalities. Scope and impact of whatever we do are constantly expected to grow, and while we are captured in this all-encompassing growth-mania, we are of course also expected to grow as humans.
Should we, therefore, practice shrinking?
